Welcome to our New Principal!

Welcome to Ben Honoroff, the new Interim Acting Principal of MS50 – El Puente Community School!

The new principal (IA) of MS 50 is Ben Honoroff, a veteran NYC educator.  Prior to this new role, Ben spent two years with the Office of Interschool Collaborative Learning where he served as literacy and programming coach with the NYC Middle School Quality Initiative (MSQI), and prior to that he was an Assistant Principal and teacher at ACORN Community High School.

Ben has helped schools implement comprehensive literacy plans aligned to MSQI’s five pillars (Reading/Screening/Monitoring, Literacy Across the Content Areas, Strategic Reading Period, Collaborative Teacher Teams, and Continuous Professional Development). Ben also founded the MSQI Debate League and helped 30 MSQI middle schools, including MS 50, start competitive debate teams. Ben led MSQI’s Parent Teacher Home Visit Project pilot as well as a partnership with Lincoln Center Education (LCE) called “Art as Text” that aligned LCE’s Capacities for Imaginative Learning with MSQI’s 5 Pillars to add art to the “text diet” of middle school students.

As MS 50’s MSQI coach for the past two years, Ben helped teachers across content areas implement reading strategies, helped the school program Strategic Reading Periods for all students, and helped ELA teachers engage student in cycles of Independent Reading, Small Group Reading Instruction and Book Clubs.  Ben also helped MS 50 start a competitive debate team (top student won 3rd place speaker overall at the 2014 MSQI Championships) and helped MS 50 start a Spoken Word club that performed at MSQI’s poetry celebration.

Through Ben’s work as MSQI Coach at MS 50 he has built relationships and earned the trust of multiple stakeholders, including teachers, school leadership and El Puente.
